Meeting Minutes: October 13, 2009

The following minutes were taken at the October 13, 2009 meeting. These minutes are pending approval.


Meeting begins at 6:29 p.m.

1. Approval of last month's minutes.

2. Treasurer's report: Ending Balance is $7088.52

3. Tom Fink reported that the Spirit Cards have been selling ($10. Each). Local businesses have been included.

4. Administrative Update by Chris Andrade:

- Eric Hieser is in Seville this week making a presentation.

- Twenty German exchange students were in the building today. They will also visit Sturgis next Thursday.

- Progress reports will be in the mail by Friday(10/16). Progress reports carry letter grades. Report cards will carry number grades (1-100) plus two comments or a narrative.

- Student Council members were elected last week. A representative was elected for each class. There are two advisors: Marcia Yalden and Megan Briggs.

-Student/Teacher Volleyball Game will be Thursday, Oct. 22nd at the Barnstable Recreation Center.

- The PSATs will take place tomorrow. It's practice for sophomores. For the juniors, there are National Merit opportunities.

- October 23rd is a half-day professional development day. The staff will be looking at assessment, grading, progress, etc. Students will be dismissed at 11:45 a.m.

- Spirit Week is the last week of October. The classes compete each day on a different activity. The winning class receives a pizza party.

5. Driver's Education. Tom Fink is looking to see if there is interest in starting up an afternoon program at Sturgis.

6. New building. The addition of a second building will be considered. Upcoming meeting at the Statehouse on October 22nd. Our capacity is currently 425 students; looking for a limit of 800 students with the second building. Will remain under one charter. Preserving the culture and community of current building is our number one priority.

7. Dates have been set for the Arts Festival (Sunday, May 2nd) and the Prom (May 29th).

8. Auction. Stephanie Miles will volunteer to be this year's chairperson for the auction. Krsana Henry (last year's chairperson) will be a behind the scenes co-chair. Date is not set yet. There is a need for a place (residence) to store the items until the auction and for people to pick up the donated items.

9. After Prom. Items ( $, lap top, gift cert., etc.) are needed for the raffle. Parents of underclassmen should be chairperson(s) of the After Prom. Chairperson(s) have not been identified yet. Tom Dauwalder will call Willy's Gym regarding location. Cindi Griffin suggests that we give out flyers, etc., when the student buys a ticket.

10. Christmas Stroll. Cindi Griffin volunteers to run a crafts activity at the Christmas stroll.

11. Tom Fink will contact Jim Barrasso regarding providing refreshments during sporting events.

12. Monthly SPA Meeting. The SPA meetings will be held on the second Monday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Some of the ideas brought up include: invite 2-3 seniors to talk to parents regarding the IB program, invite the Guidance staff to talk to parents, and invite Eric Hieser to talk about the increase in the capacity of students and the addition of a new building.
